An Overview and Applications of PVC Coated Films

PVC Coated Films are basically used to protect your material from getting damaged due to moisture, dirt or scratches and to keep it protected. It increases the quality of your product as well. There are four kinds of PVC coatings that are used for commercial printing and they are overprint varnish, lamination, aqueous coating, and Ultra violet coating. These are provided in matte, dull or satin, and gloss formulations.

Overprint Varnish

Varnish keeps your stuff protected from exposure to moisture, dirt or scratches. This is not expensive at all. This can be applied in two ways: either in the overall printed area or to some parts of the product in order to highlight it. It makes the images look sharp and bright.

Aqueous Coating

Aqueous coatings lie somewhere between varnish and UV coatings. It is used mainly as a smudge and fingerprint resistant as they have fast- drying quality. They provide more safety than varnish coating. These are not water resistant because the ink needs to dry completely. The more satin a sheet will be, the less rub resistant it would be. Well, if you want the coating to be more rub resistant, then it would be less glossy.

People generally prefer aqueous over varnish because of aqueous being highly satin, it does not get yellow with time, has also high rub resistance, and since it is based on whether it is eco – friendly. But yes, it is not water resistant.

Laminate

Laminate is available in two kinds: one is a film based, the other is liquid based. Laminate is more inexpensive than the varnish and aqueous coatings, but it is more water resistant and provides a washable and potent surface.

UV Coating

This coating is used to highlight the content or product because of its high glossy character. It is also vulcanized by ultraviolet lamps. It has instant drying features and is water based.

Above mentioned coating has their pros and cons, but the selection of the coating varies with the type of product you want to use it on.

Global Leaders of Flexible Packaging Films - Cosmo Film Ltd.

Cosmo films ltd. is the leading producer of Flexible Packaging Films. They are the world’s second largest manufacturers of BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) with 27% shares across the world market. BOPP Films are those which we encounter with almost everyday. These are used in many products on regular basis. BOPP films are used in materials like beverages, chips’ packaging, vitamin packs, CD’s and DVD’s pack etc. These films are more flexible than polyster. They are not just used in packaging of materials but also in the stationary products, metalizing, and also in labelling etc.

Types of BOPP films that are provided by Cosmo Films Ltd. are laminated BOPP films, metalised BOPP films, tape BOPP films, and label films. These are available in various sizes and heaviness as per your choice. While manufacturing the film, it is elongated so that it will cover the product perfectly and make it look exactly the way you want it to. This also helps in increasing the marketing of the product. The labels often attract the customers and increasing its selling capacity.

Since it is used as a label on the product’s packaging, there must be some content that is supposed to be printed on it. The strengthening of the BOPP film allows the content to be printed clearly and tidy that will further enhance the display of the product.

BOPP films are also used for displaying of graphics, logo or any company or brand’s name. It is often used in shops and showrooms to display the name and designed according to the selection by the customer. It can be made available in any size and thickness.

These films are popular because of its assurance of good shrinking ability, transparency as well as harshness.

Cosmo Films Ltd., A Brand Name in Film Packaging Industry

Ashok Jaipuria, the son of late Sitaram Jaipuria, former CEO of the Swadeshi Polytex, is the name behind the brand Cosmo Films Ltd. (CFL). He is the name behind the manufacture of BOPP (biaxially – oriented polypropylene) film that is used in large scale for packaging of products. The company was established in 1976 and after four years it went public.

Cosmo Films Ltd. conducts two plants in Maharashtra, one is at Chikalthana and the other at Waluj, both in the district of Aurangabad. They have the production capacity of combined 23100 MTPA of BOPP and Synthetic Paper. CFL is the first to have ISO 9002 certified biaxially oriented polypropylene manufacturing. CFL is going to start with it’s other project that it has taken up at the same location near Waluj.

This company entered into the world of exporting products from 1994 onwards. Since the competition for the products in the market has been rising, and with that the demand for CFL products is also going high. For meeting the demand of its products, the company has taken up another plant for the manufacturing work of BOPP films in the Aurangabad district itself, in the Waluj Industrial Area.

For scaling up its installed capacity, CFL took up debottlenecking programme in 1996-97. Once again the company scaled up its installed capacity in 1997-98 to 14,100 MT. The company now is looking forward for buying a land in Nashik, Maharashtra as well in collaboration with the US company, General Electric. Cosmo Films became conventional in 1986 and in the world of BOPP Films, it is the second largest company with a big brand name and share of 27% in the market.

What are the Applications of BOPP Films in Food Packaging Industry

BOPP is bi-axially oriented and polypropylene film intended for flexible label and packaging applications. Oriented polypropylene, OPP, is a very flexible material which is derived from orienting and melting a polymer known as polypropylene. The raw material which is oil by-product tends to be still and unchanged by most of the chemical agents occurring there in daily lives. Bi-axially oriented means the polypropylene films are stretched in both machine direction and also across machine direction.

Main feature of the BOPP Films are high tensile strength, improved stiffness, good water barrier and excellent optics properties. They vary from 15 - 50 microns and most commonly are 15 - 30 microns. Such films can be coextuded or monolayer structures, and metalized, opaque, or transparent. They also have an advantage of being fully recyclable and non-toxic.

BOPP films offer excellent light barriers, humidity, aroma and UV light protection. They have greater strength at lower gauges, excellent printability, clarity and flatness. They can be easily treated with PVDC and acrylic coatings for barrier properties and better sealability.

The uses of Bopp Film in the Food Packaging Industry are many. The food packaging needs are very stringent. These BOPP films have lots of properties that are advantageous and suitable for packing the food materials. Basic applications for packing the food materials include:

• The packaging protects the nutritionals of the food until final consumption. Thus, it is wanted that the package must have sufficient barriers to moisture, light and gas.
• The package enhances the products sales appeal on shelf and also offer all statutory information. Therefore, the pack must have good printability and optical properties.
• BOPP films have outstanding clarity, gloss and transparency.
• As these films are cost-effective, hence they are widely used.
